About Our First Year Intern Program
As a first year university student who is studying either an Engineering or Science degree, you are becoming curious about where your degree could take you. You may not have thought about joining the resources sector, but BHP has introduced a first year intern program that will give you a unique opportunity to explore a world of career possibilities.
BHP’s “Resourcing Your Future – First Year Intern Program” is designed with you in mind. You’ll gain an understanding on how BHP is helping to build a better world through responsible mining of the commodities the world needs and how technology is being embraced to build a safer and more efficient workplace. You will learn about Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geoscience and Geomatics which will provide you with insights into a range of careers that are on offer.
Throughout the program, you will hear from BHP team members who will share their technical and professional insights, as well as learning about BHP has an organisation. A key highlight of the program is that you will collaborate with other interns on an Environmental or Social Value project and present your business case to a panel of leaders. You will be given an opportunity to connect with a mentor to guide and support you throughout your degree. If you perform well and develop an interest in the mining industry you will be eligible for a second placement in November 2023.
Joining as an Intern, you will be based in one of our corporate offices (Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide) that is closest to your home university. To broaden your experience, you and your fellow interns will spend two weeks at one of our mining operations (one week in December and the second week in January), where under the guidance of our experienced managers you will see how a mine site operates. As our operations are based in regional Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, you will be provided with flights, safety equipment and clothing, accommodation and meals during your time on site.
Our paid six week program commences on the 28 November 2022 and concludes on 25 January 2023, which includes a break over the Christmas / New Year period (22 Dec to 6 Jan 2023) for you to recharge your batteries. For you to get the most out of this experience, it is required that you are able to commit to the entire program.
